What is involved in a Kinesiology Session?

Disclaimer
Kinesiology does not claim to cure anything.  We believe that only the person’s body can cure itself.  We are the conduit or the facilitator of change to take place in the person’s body.  Although science requires evidence based proof of efficacy to prove the theory and techniques, absence of this evidence in research does not disprove the safety and efficacy of kinesiology treatments. Dr George Goodheart DC, (dec’d May 2008) the father of Kinesiology said “The body is simply intricate and intricately simple.  If you supply the right measure you will get the right response.”

Kinesiology is a therapy involving a client and a practitioner.  It is a sacred contract between two people with both working together to achieve a positive outcome.  Some practitioners work from offices, clinics and some will operate from their residence in a clinical setting in their home set aside for clinical work.  The session can last from 30 minutes to one and a half hours, depending on the client’s presenting problems.  Follow up visits may be in one, two or three weeks.  A few visits are required for more lasting results but it is not necessary to have a long extended treatment program for the same problem.  If this happens then the client needs other therapies with or instead of what they are receiving.  The fees charged may vary from $60 to over $200, again depending on all factors.  Health Funds may rebate a set amount if the client is in the appropriate level of cover for extra therapies.

Muscle Testing
The practitioner will use muscle testing / checking / monitoring to evaluate stress levels in the person’s nervous and energy systems.  With over 100 different training courses from most countries around the world a wide and diverse array of techniques may be employed by a Kinesiology Practitioner.  Most Kinesiology Practitioners will be a Member of a Peak Kinesiology Industry Association.  With recent changes to teaching, now mainly through Registered Training Organizations there will be a more “standardised approach” to the clinical practice of Kinesiology.  As Kinesiology has its background in Chiropractic / Osteopathic and Acupuncture philosophies there is a definite aspect of “hands on therapy”.

Booking an appointment
When the client / patient arrives at the clinic after an appointment has been made, prior information may have been provided in brief e.g. a general description of methods to be used, fees to be paid, length of consultation, clothes to be worn, supplements, herbs, therapy oils, equipment that may be useful and will be an extra charge etc.  Kinesiology Practitioners usually charge for a complete session, as different to the medical item where a charge is made for each aspect of the treatment with an item number. The client will be advised that no drugs, chiropractic adjustments, x-rays or surgery will be employed.  Also, the practitioner may advise that referrals to other professionals may be necessary e.g. Dentists, chiropractors, doctors for blood tests etc., depending on the person’s current problems.

History Taken
On arrival, before any therapy is started a thorough history of the person will be taken.  The current reason for the appointment is important as this obviously is the reason the person came, however as Kinesiologists we are more interested in the cause of the effect the person is experiencing.  All injuries, diseases, visits to hospitals, surgeries, major visits to the doctor, visits to other practitioners, emotional stresses in relation to the issues, relationships at work and at home with family, any abuse that they have suffered, hereditary matters such as disease and health problems of parents, and their general state of wellbeing during the last few months / years of their lives.  Other questions may relate to blood tests, x-rays, scans, supplements that they are taking, and drugs that are prescribed and any substances that they may be using such as illicit drugs.  These factors all relate to their present symptoms – which are not as important as the causes, if they genuinely wish to achieve a state of wellness.

The Therapy Session
Most practitioners will use a massage table for most of their therapy, for many reasons.  Some therapy will be conducted with the person standing for a short while.  At no time will the person be completely naked, however it may be required for the person to remove some of their clothing to to perform certain aspects of the therapy.  Although Kinesiology is not massage there are some massage principles used by some kinesiologists, again depending on their training as mentioned above.

The arms or legs are usually used to perform the muscle testing and muscle response testing.            A muscle test is performed to check for the integrity of an individual muscle.  Once this has been performed and is treated to bring it into “balance”, it is known as an intact, neurologically integrated muscle.  This muscle can now be used to test for problems and imbalances in other muscles and the nervous system.  This may involve checking for cranial bone blockages, emotional stress on various issues from the past, the present or the future.  It can identify factors unknown to the person’s conscious thinking, injuries not remembered, allergies to foods and various substances in the environment, phobias etc.  Also pain in the body may manifest as a real pain when in fact the cause may be an emotional issue, unresolved.  Many injuries such as head injuries have healed but the memory in the nervous system is long forgotten consciously but is still in the computer circuits.  Only with muscle testing and muscle response testing will this be revealed where it can be reprogrammed into the nervous system.  Along with unresolved head injuries there may be whiplash memory which again can only be tested after the head injury is corrected.  When having the session a muscle test is performed then the practitioner will make slight correction to the body or use an affirmation to change the response of the muscle test.

Outcomes
After a session of kinesiology a person may be relaxed, still suffering from inflammation which is felt as residual pain or muscle spasm, extreme tiredness, nauseous if digestive and toxic factors have been stirred up or they may feel elated.  Many times children with behavioural problems and learning difficulties may experience dramatic changes and sometimes nothing at all.  After a while gradual changes will usually be seen. Sometimes a number of treatments may be necessary, however “the miracle” may occur after only one session.  It is recommended to have everything checked to ensure the best results.

History

History of Kinesiology and The Institute

In the late 1960's an American Chiropractor by the name of Dr George Goodheart DC developed a new concept, based on a number of older Chiropractic ideas, adding new information that he had discovered himself. He called this new modality "Applied Kinesiology". It was the study of how the body works, using"muscle testing" as a feedback process.
In the early 1970's another Chiropractor from Pasadena California, Dr John Thie DC, met Dr Goodheart and studied with him in a small research group. After developing a simple, safe and very effective system he called"TOUCH FOR HEALTH", Dr Thie began teaching this new "self-help program" to his patients. He wrote a very easy-to-follow book called simply, "Touch For Health". Many people from all over America came to study with Dr Thie and soon word had spread to Great Britain and other countries around the world.
Kinesiology is practised in a number of ways. People visit a Kinesiologist for a specific reason eg, they may suffer from allergies, phobias, emotional stress, scoliosis, dyslexia, bedwetting, behavioural problems, drug addiction etc.

Or a person may visit for a "balance session" to fine tune their body if they just feel a "little out of sorts". In other words, you do not need to be suffering from a "disease" or major diagnosed symptom to benefit from Kinesiology.

The MAIN FACTORS in Kinesiology.

We have an understanding of the body through different eyes to Western Medicine. Where as Medicine looks at a person's symptoms and bases most treatment on the symptoms, Kinesiology considers the function of the body "in relation to"
• the Neuro-Lymphatic Reflex system
• the Neuro-Vascular Reflex system
• the Acupuncture Meridian system
and how these systems may or may not be "switched-on" for muscle/organ function.
We also consider the Survival Systems of the body:
• Feeding
• Fight / Flight / Fright
• Reproduction
• Limbic/Immune
through the TRIAD OF HEALTH which considers:
• A.   Structural / Physical
• B.   Nutritional / Chemical
• C.   Emotional / Mental
and the Acupuncture Energy system which connects all of the above. The Spiritual aspect is also very important as we are essentially Spiritual Beings having a "Human Experience!"

Kinesiology can assist and often correct many of the following problems:
• Emotional Stress problems
• Physical imbalances often resulting in pain
• Mental problems generally involving the area of learning, (eg. ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia etc)either at school or at work and play
• Nutritional imbalances / deficiencies resulting in disease states
• Relationship difficulties and is a great tool in counseling often getting to the root cause of the problem in a very short time.
• Enhancement in sports performance as well as injury prevention
• Goal setting
• Overcoming phobias which can be life destroying for many people.
• Clearing chemical and food allergies and intolerances
• Plus giving a new self responsibility to each person so they can take charge of their own life.
